SUPPORTING LOCAL ART

Hola, Vallarta! I'm Kathleen Forte, a photographer and travel blogger with @InsideVallarta. Each month I feature five of my favorite things to see and experience, places to be, and people to meet in Puerto Vallarta. We already know what paradise is here when we dig our toes into miles of pristine beaches, walk in and out of colorful open-air markets, shop local wares, and patiently wait each evening for another glorious sunset!

Puerto Vallarta also offers openly displayed well-known masterpiece gems. As residents, visitors, and even day-trippers, we get used to seeing these exhibited treasures, maybe even taking them for granted. But have you ever taken time to explore and find the almost hidden gems that are really in plain sight? Well, get ready to discover five you may have passed without notice from tucked-in neighborhoods, along the beach and nearby countryside.

Francine Peters

This vibrant artist used bold acrylic paint, intertwining color and whimsy for her city scenes and landscapes, including beach life. Francine relocated to Puerto Vallarta in 2012 from Canada's West Coast, where her career started in 1996-being a self-taught artist. She found personal rejuvenation throughout her remarkable work and shared it with the world. I'm not yet fortunate to own and display one of her paintings. The finished result is joyful and inspiring, from her canvases to the painted brick of this older building in Zona Romantica. As a permanent fixture of Puerto Vallarta's art scene, she knew how to capture our dynamic city's movement and vitality!

Mosaic Park

More than likely, on a Saturday morning, you find yourself at the market in Lazaro Cardenas in Old Town. Surrounding this park is a flamingo-themed bench, one of many covered in mosaic tile designs. Created for this public art installation, Natasha Moraga has brought a once dark and gray park to light, contributing her skill here and around PV. High season brings participants who can make personal history covering a seated area in tiles or giving a legacy to honor loved ones. You'll find many street pockets lined with these gleaming gems, which can withstand many weather elements thrown at them. Grab a moment, take a rest, and feel the love from the heart of Vallarta!

Walking along the Malecon one balmy ocean breeze evening, I was captivated by a visible mural tucked under the Rio Cuale Pedestrian Bridge. I learned PV urban resident artist Tony Collantez produced it. This attention-grabbing gem reflects Mexican actress Maria Felix, using small rectangles with paint in monochromatic grey, black, and white shades. The colors fuse his design for a 3-D effect with computer pixels for inspiration. He produces thought-provoking gems around the city to remind us of Mexico's past while preserving its present, having us all share in his vision for the future. Who knows what you'll discover when you start looking under bridges!
Lady of the Garden Chapel

On the grounds of natural paradise Vallarta Botanical Gardens, you'll find a not-so-hidden gem, The Lady of the Garden Chapel. Go inside and be in awe of the Chapel's interior walls, recently covered with magnificent custom-made fabric. Artists David Allen Burn and Austin Young shot hundreds of photos of colorful orchids, hummingbirds, flora, and fauna at different times of the year in the gardens. The images flow in a pattern on the sky, sun, and earth colors. This permanent installation provides a spiritual experience for visitors while connected to the outside natural environment.
PV Bugs

Finally, we could debate this over a margarita or two, but some of my favorite gems around town are the souped-up versions of the Volkswagen Bug original. There aren't many of these old-timers in PV, so they really command attention. Whenever I come across one, I instantly smile with admiration. And, by being painted in such vibrant colors, you can't miss them. They still rumble along, making the same noise as before added modification, but it's the 'new' shape, or lack of, that puts them into a category all by themselves. I'll ask an owner to let me ride shotgun and take a spin on the cobblestone streets one of these days!
