On Sunday January 15 2023, Mexico brought into force one of the world's strictest anti-tobacco laws by enacting a total ban on smoking in public places. This step, which was first approved in 2021, also includes a ban on tobacco advertising has now become law. This is an extension of Mexico's existing 2008 law - which created smoke-free spaces in bars, restaurants and workplaces – it is now extended to an outright ban in all public spaces. That includes parks, beaches, hotels, rental properties, condos, offices and restaurant public spaces.
All PVRPV properties have been smoke-free for many years now. This included; patios, terraces, outdoor spaces attached to or a part of a Vacation Rental Property. However, some allowances were made in some buildings to have smoking areas on the premises or parts of the common areas.
Effective January 15th 2023, no smoking is permitted anywhere on any property including terraces, balconies, common areas or special designated areas. No special permissions can be granted as this is not an optional enforcement, it is the law.
