Teatro Limon Supports Pasitos de Luz through Charity Bingo

I’m so glad Teatro Limon supports your charity or I may not have experienced one of the best evenings ever in my numerous visits to PV over the years.

Bruce the owner and chef extraordinaire greeted my guest and myself as we entered where he was busily directing and preparing a gourmet delight for the fortunate diners yet to come.  Being from Vancouver we are still having supper at 6pm rather than dining at 8pm. In this case it gave us an opportunity to tour the establishment and relish in the decor and ambiance. After a very animated and informative conversation with Bruce about ingredients and food allergies we decided to not even look at a menu and gave the chef carte Blanche.  This decision was a wise one as we had a four course dinner that would have tantalized the most educated of pallets.

Julia, the hostess, attended to our every need, we learned as the evening progressed that Julia is Bruce’s wife and that we were dining in their house (they live upstairs). Being a smoker we adjourned to the torch lit terrace for coffee and cognac and to make the evening even more interesting as other guests did the same at Bruce’s encouragement our table grew with a most interesting conglomerate of expats and tourists. As the evening wound down Julia and Bruce joined us and turned it into a complete family affair… (Including Bruno, their dog). To top the evening off we were treated to Julia’s Crème Brûlée and being from Great Britain where sweets are a high priority I’ll leave the results to your imagination.

This evening turned into a most interesting and memorable adventure.

I highly recommend that you give Teatro Limon a most deserved plug at your next Bingo. I know your supporters will certainly reap the benefits if you do…

Hasta Luego. Bernardo

CHARITY BINGO has returned in support of Pasitos de Luz – Week 4

Wow!  What a great turn out for Charity Bingo for Pasitos de Luz at Nacho Daddy this week.  107 people! There were a lot of new faces and many of these first-timers won too!  It is so wonderful to see so many come out to support this very worthy charity and enjoy themselves at the same time.  Juan Carlos was calling out the numbers fast and furious throughout the night and kept everything moving along at a quick pace, keeping everyone on their toes and entertained.

The 50/50 winner this week was none other than our own Nina Goodhope of La Bodega de Nina.  A well deserved winner if there ever was one.  Thanks Nina for all your hard work and continued support of Charity Bingo for Pasitos de Luz.  Now, about those cookies…

The evening´s raffle prizes were donated by Isabel Manore for a one night stay for two at her own Casa Isabel located up in Alta Vista.  One was won by Hank Muffet & Conrad Kostelecky formerly of the Old Town Chili´s fame and now are doing their own special lunch thing at Cafe Bohemia from 11:00 am till 3:00 pm, Monday through Saturday.  You gotta love their French Dips….and yes, they do have many other wonderful tasty treats on their menu.

The other was won by volunteer, Tracy Lee Gehue. Just so you know, when you purchase a raffle ticket at Charity Bingo for Pasitos de Luz you are actually eligible for two drawings.  The first is on the night you purchase the ticket and the second being the wrap party to be held at the end of our Bingo Season.  Even the winning tickets go back into the draw that final evening.  Double your pleasure and buy your raffle tickets today!

A special thank you goes out to Inez Clay, 92 years young, from Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, who brought down some handcrafted dolls for the children of Pasitos de Luz.  She has personally hand knitted over 700 dolls that she has donated to the children in Haiti and to the Sisters of Spirits, a native group and various other worthy charities.  She tells me that she is addicted to knitting these dolls because they keep her out of trouble and she is so pleased that the children like them so much.

We would also like to remind you that there are many material items on the Wish List that Pasitos de Luz is desperately in need of.  Please follow the link and check it out: http://www.pvrpv.com/blog/pasitos-de-luz-wish-list/ At the next Charity Bingo for Pasitos de Luz, when you bring in an item off the Wish List we will give you one free bingo card with your purchase of bingo cards.

Southside Shuffle – Puerto Vallarta

Basilio Badillo

Friday November 12th

6 – 10 pm

In 1988, Basilio Badillo was known for three restaurants, Roberto’s Puerto Nuevo, Pizza Joe, El Tucan. These restaurants were so successful that more restaurants and other businesses started to relocate to this area.  In the mid-90’s there were 12 restaurants on the 200 block of Basilio Badillo and for years it was known as Calle de los Café’s (Restaurant Row)  Most of the restaurants have closed, and fine shops started to take over.  The area has been known for some years as “a one stop shopping center” the finest area in town to find quality items, from folk art to fine art, home furnishings to jewelry and clothing.

So this fall, the following businesses decided  to  move forward with “The Southside Shuffle” – a street party of sorts, a shindig, open house, fun times. Friday evenings (6 -10 pm) twice a month will be a social gathering with music and drinks to rejuvenate the South side. The participating businesses are as follows, but there are also many other wonderful shops, restaurants and galleries in the vicinity that we also hope will benefit from our event.

The “people” will stroll (shuffle) from business to business. Drinks will be provided at all the establishments and musicians will stroll up and down the street.

Old Town Farmer’s Market Opens – Puerto Vallarta

by Kathleen Harris

The Old Town Farmer’s Market opened for the season on Saturday, November 6th, resplendent with familiar delights and new surprises. At 10 am the cowbell rang, gates opened, and 50 plus people already waiting swept in, soon followed by hundreds more. The weather was perfect, the market stalls beautifully arranged, and the crowd of over 950 shoppers enthusiastic. It was fun watching friends re-connecting, providing a delightful sense of community.

Vendors familiar and new offered a dazzling array of products:  Beautiful plants, herbs and flowers, and a variety of produce including okra, salad greens, sprouts, purple basil, baby squashes, squash blossoms, kale and radishes.  Local fruits included pineapples, papayas, oranges, lemons, grapefruits, bananas and gigantic kiwis.

Jewelery booths showed beadwork and vintage spoon jewelry, Sylvie Scopazzo’s booth provided natural dog treats, and another new vendor had organic peanuts.  In addition to the finest fresh pastas and sauces, take home and bake meat or vegetarian lasagna, Michel of Michel’s Trattoria now has his own hand crafted ricotta.

The quality and quantity of baked goods defies description:  Paradise Bakery sold cinnamon buns, hidden heart cakes and mocha almond bars, Calaca Bakes new creations included green tea and ginger cake and chile chocolate cake, and the variety of breads from Vera Bakery and the Artisan Bakery was amazing!

An area of the market is devoted to non-profits in order to support their good works.  The SPCA brought dogs for adoption, and Pet Heaven brought half a dozen kittens. Biblioteca Los Mangos had a booth offering folks who donate a personalized tile installed at their building, and the Culture and Promotional area is where community agencies can give information and sell tickets to their events.

Dueto Mancha, a husband and wife duo that perform at Coco Tropical, provided a delightful musical backdrop, and the tantalizing aroma of roasting sausages from Carnes del Mundo flavored the morning air. Narisa’s new Thai recipes included peppers stuffed with curried red snapper, and heavenly fish cakes.

The market continues to seek farmers/growers, so anyone wanting to sell their produce, please contact the Market Coordinator at 225-4108, or by email at: coordinator@oldtownfm.com.

Join us every Saturday, from 10 am to 2 pm (an extra hour of shopping this year!) at the Paradise Community Center, Calle Pulpito #127, between Amapas and Olas Altas.  For updated products, event announcements and news, visit us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/Old.Town.Farmers.Market.PV, or online at http://www.oldtownfm.com/.

CHARITY BINGO has returned in support of Pasitos de Luz – Week 3

Considering the Day of the Dead celebrations and the American Election we had an amazing turnout of over 80 enthusiastic bingo players.  Juan Carlos was at the helm calling out the bingo numbers and a fun time was had by all.

Yolanda from Pasitos de Luz came down and joined in the fun for a change…bringing luck to her table, where there were 2 game winners and the 50/50 winner, Mikki Prost of Encore Consignment Boutique who took home over $2650 extra pesos.  Way to go, Mikki!!

Javier Castañeda from Cork+Bottle at Los Mercados, took around a dozen or so of La Bodega de Nina´s delicious cookies during the break and sold them for 10 pesos each, all of which Nina donated back to Pasitos de Luz.  He sold out before he even made it to the second table.  Awesome job!  Now, we just need to convince Nina to bring more!!

All in all, we raised $12,184.60 pesos for the desperately needed funds for Pasitos de Luz.  We would like you to know that the organizing committee had the opportunity to this past week to see the books for this amazing charity.  The meticulous bookkeeping was very refreshing and we were able to verify exactly where every pesos donated went.  It is staggering what the expenses just for the basic necessities come to each month.  Even with the volunteers there that come out religiously, there are underpaid staff members deferring their salaries in order for Pasitos de Luz to afford to keep the lights on.  Many doctors, therapists and other specialists either donate their services or hugely reduce their fees to only cover the basic costs so the families and children do not go without the care they so desperately need.  When there is no government support or individual benefactors, they have to rely on the generosity of the general public, YOU, in order to do the work that they do.

Here’s the list of the Bingo Winners for this week:
