Day of the Dead Honors – The Deceased Holiday’s Focus Different than Halloween’s

At first glance, the Mexican custom of El Día de los Muertos — the Day of the Dead — may sound much like the U.S. custom of Halloween. After all, the celebration traditionally starts at midnight the night of Oct. 31, and the festivities are abundant in images related to death.
But the customs have different origins, and their attitudes toward death are different: In the typical Halloween festivities, death is something to be feared. But in el día de los muertos, death — or at least the memories of those who have died — is something to be celebrated.
El día de los muertos, which continues until Nov. 2, has become one of the biggest holidays in Mexico, and celebrations are becoming more common in areas of the United States with a large Hispanic population. Its origins are distinctly Mexican: During the time of the Aztecs, a monthlong summer celebration was overseen by the goddess Mictecacihuatl, the Lady of the Dead. After the Aztecs were conquered by Spain and Catholicism became the dominant religion, the customs became intertwined with the Christian commemoration of All Saints’ Day on Nov. 1.
Specifics of the celebration vary with region, but one of the most common customs is the making of elaborate altars to welcome departed spirits home. Vigils are held, and families often go to cemeteries to fix up the graves of their departed relatives. Festivities also frequently include traditional foods such as pan de muerto (bread of the dead), which can conceal a miniature skeleton.
There are some other Web sites where you can learn more about the celebration.

Puerto Vallarta “The City of the Bougainvilleas”

Xocodiva, bite me! beach club and PVRPV – Puerto Vallarta Rentals, do it again. With just a week after having terminated their previous project – Carol Fast, Charlotte Semple, Grant Hunermund and Tim Longpre come together to continue with three more weeks of bingo, this time to help enhance our already beautiful Puerto Vallarta. The project called “The City of the Bougainvilleas” is headed by Robert Price of Botanical Gardens and the city of Puerto Vallarta, its goal is to plant the amount of 5,000.00 bougainvillea bushes, amapas and spring flowers, from the International Airport Gustavo Diaz Ordaz to Mismaloya.
The project was approved and supported by Ing. Lázaro Cárdenas Tovar from H. Ayuntamiento de Puerto Vallarta (City Hall) and by Lic. Alfredo Velázquez Islas del Despacho de la Dirección de Servicios Públicos Municipales (Municipal Department of Public Services). The project is to improve the appearance of Puerto Vallarta including parks and gardens, as well as, streets and roads.
The idea started thanks to the swine flu scare A-H1N1, as this seriously affected the image of Mexico thus affecting tourism in Puerto Vallarta. It plans to obtain an improvement in the image of our fabulous city – Puerto Vallarta.
Besides attending the weekly bingo at bite me! beach club in Playa los Muertos, you can also donate via PayPal or if you prefer buying them at a value of $ 16.00 pesos or in groups of 100 for $ 1600.00 dollars.
Not only we’ll contribute with the environment, but also will provide a better image to this paradise we love so much.

Bingo goes out with a BANG!
On Thursday, October 1, the closing party for Bingo for Beans and Babies was held at bite me! beach club on Los Muertos Beach. Nearly 200 people turned out to party the evening away in support of Pasitos de Luz. The party was entitled Mad Hatter, and the name turned out to be highly appropriate. Some truly astonishing head gear was in evidence and we truly appreciated the hard work and imagination people put in to their mostly home made creations.
Singer Kim Kuzma gave another truly terrific performance. Her amazing voice and charisma had the crowd on their feet dancing for most of the evening.
Bingo for Beans and Babies, sponsored by bite me! beach club, PVRPV – Puerto Vallarta Rentals and Xocodiva, has raised a total of $147,997.00 pesos for Pasitos de Luz, and last night’s party was a celebration of the generosity and commitment of so many loyal bingo fans. A big round of applause to everyone who attended, as well as to the many local businesses that pitched in to make this a success, donating both time and prizes.
