The Big Dog Contest in Puerto Vallarta Mexico – El Concurso del Perro Grande en Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Recently, PVRPV had the opportunity to join in the fun of “The Big Dog Treasure Hunt” here in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Contestants were told that it was a mixture of Amazing Race and Fear Factor. The winning team would receive $10,000.00 US dollars and $15,000.00 in prices. We would also be involved in a new reality show which will be airing sometime in the summer of 2009 on the Travel Channel.
Since many of the Team members (Julie, Morgan, Steve and Tim) had watched Amazing Race on weekly basis, we figured we had a great chance of winning something. Well, 7:00 am came fast and off we went to pre-register with all of the other teams. We really did not know what to expect and were told a few of the rules before arriving: No personal cars and only public transportation could be used in the race and we would finish sometime around 8:00pm. We knew we´d be given clues as we moved around the Bay of Banderas and would also need to perform some challenges.
Once registration was done, we were given three envelopes containing Treasure Hunt dollars and a map with clues listed on them. One of the main clues we would need to find was Bones. We were told to look high, look low, look under and ask everyone, “Do you have a Bone for us?” The horn sounded and, just like on Amazing Race, everyone ran as fast as we possibly could. As we ran towards the nearest taxi, feeling lucky we found one so close, we were told very quickly that he was waiting for another team (which had apparently had the forethought to pre-arrange a taxi) and off to the main road we ran. In Puerto Vallarta you would normally see a Taxi every second car but of course not on this morning. As we continued running we discovered a taxi sitting there almost like it was meant to be. As we all jumped in we asked him to take us to Dr Tomato which was located just north of Plaza Caracol. From hours of watching Amazing Race we had learned a thing or two, so we called out “RAPIDO”. It worked. As we arrived to the location and paid for the taxi off, we all ran into the little tiny stand. We discovered that we must have read the instructions incorrectly because they indicated they did not have a bone for us and the tomatoes were not here yet. We immediately ran out to discover that our taxi had not waited for us since we had already paid him. To our surprise we saw a taxi waiting for another team that had followed the same poor logic and, while they were in tomatoe stand, we jumped into the taxi and called out “rapido”! The taxi driver looked at us with confusion and asked if we were the same team that had just got out. Of course we indicated we were and to go FAST. He then realized we were not the team and told us that the team had not paid yet but we told him not to worry and to go and we would pay their fare as well. Well this first experience had us laughing so hard and we were sure to have a fun day together.
The scavange hunt was the first task of the day with a lot of laughing and running around. You can imagine peoples expressions when we were kept asking Do You Have A Bone For Me!!
Challenges varied from eating hot Chiles, finding colored rocks in a pool (You go Morgan!), drinking numerous tequila shots, swimming out to a boat in the ocean, consuming beer and kissing a horses arse, just to name but a few!
Well the day was fun and we had many laughs but we wanted to win! so we decided that we´d probably be much more successful if we hired a taxi for the day. We did and took off to the Marina, returned to Centro, then back to back to Old Town and then back to the Marina!
After many many shots of tequila and even a Rascilia shot (Yuk!), we came down to the last challenge. A little worse for the wear, team PVRPV found their way to the final destination for the final tally and presentations.
We didn’t win any prizes this time, but we were very proud of our showing and felt we were a fun and competitive team.
Thank you to the organizers who gave us such a fun day and we appreciate the time and effort put into this event.
If you are interested in participating in the next challenge (tourists and locals are all welcome) they will be having another race this summer. Have a look at the following website for more information:
